Leopard Wedges....
I recently received these adorable Leopard wedges from Me Too shoes and they've immediately become one of my go to shoes this summer. Well for starters, I like anything that's a wedge or espadrille and these are equally comfortable as they are stylish. summer vacation has officially commenced
{swimming today at Nana & Baca's house..which may have included some red shoulders after it was all said and done}
Pls. excuse the blog silence. It has been the last week of school for us which for some reason has added a few extra activities here and there...some may have been extra-curricular I admit. Anyway summer vacation has officially started today and we couldn't be any happier to not have such a rigid schedule.
Summertime for us here in the desert means that sometimes even the pool gets too warm. When that happens then it is time to hit the road to avoid being trapped in air-conditioned buildings at all times. Last year I swore I was going to leave for most of the summer so we will see where we end up summer 2011.
Do you all have any fun summer plans?
P.S. - This is HUGE that I have hit the season in life that I finally feel comfortable enough to take the kids to the pool all by myself...even if at times there were more kicks than giggles if you know what I mean

Celebrity Charity Block Party A Success For LA Mission
A host of stars came together on Saturday to help the homeless and the hungry at the Los Angeles Mission.
Homelessness is a tragedy for anyone, especially families with children. Making ends meet with little or no income means that compromises are a daily occurrence. But the End of Summer Block Party at the Los Angeles Mission takes one compromise away from hundreds of families ? school supplies.
About one thousand backpacks full of schools supplies were handed out to grateful kids at the Block Party on Saturday. The day was the result of a combined effort by nonprofits, businesses and people who just want to help.
Among the celebrities who attended were Hilary Duff (Bloodworth), Charlotte Ross (Glee), Katie Blair (Miss California USA 2011), Angie Everhart (Take Me Home Tonight), Brandon Molale (True Blood), Parris Mostellar (Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer), Ty Paintz (How to Eat Fried Worms), Lauren Storm (I Love You Beth Cooper), Savannah Jayde (Big Time Rush), Kellie Goss (Big Time Rush), Tucker Albrizi (Alvin and the Chipmunks), Allisyn Ashley Arm (Meet Dave), Paige Adkins (Cuttin’ Da Mustard), REBORN (Gospel Artist), Oren Williams (Lincoln Heights), Zachary Williams (Lincoln Heights), Justin Tinnicci (Big Love), Lauren Dair Owens (Kids Quest) and others.
For a decade the Block Party has been a way for kids to play, have fun, win prizes and forget about their circumstances ? if for only a day. The Los Angeles Mission has been serving the homeless and poor in the Skid Row area for 75 years What started as a soup kitchen in the Great Depression in 1934 continues to serve the needy in the great recession of 2011.
Fifth Street, the main street of Skid Row was decorated with bright and colorful tents and inflatable play areas set up for maximum fun. Slides, a dunk tank, face painting, crafts, games and of course backpacks full of school supplies were spread down the street.
“The numbers are startling,” said Herb Smith, President of the Los Angeles Mission. "We have expanded our services to families and children daily, but it is heartbreaking to talk to parents who are trying to keep a family together while struggling to pay rent, buy food and provide all a family needs. Today is just part of the services the Mission provides to help families in economic distress.
Children from age 4 to 17 got a backpack. Nearly 1,000 backpacks and the school supplies that are so important at this time of year were distributed. Supplies, including pencils, notebooks, crayons, erasers, folders and arts & craft items were donated. The backpacks came from Blessings in a Backpack, a charity started by actress Hilary Duff. Schools supplies were donated by Jackson-Hewitt, Buck Consultants, Landsburg-Amcor and individuals.
“On behalf of Hilary Duff and myself, the importance of allowing these children, our children, to go to school with the proper supplies and knowing that someone cares about them being ready to succeed is very significant,” said Stan Curtis of Blessings in a Backpack. “We are proud of this partnership.”
Celebrity volunteers always come to Los Angeles Mission events. They worked to make sure everyone had a good time, and helped In-N-Out Burger, King Taco and the Los Angeles Mission kitchen crew serve a picnic to the Block party participants and their families. US Foods helped with a variety of food and serving items. And this year there were snow cones provided by volunteers from marketing firm Russ Reid.
Several hundred volunteers from all over the area gave their time ? with tens of thousands of hours given by thousands of volunteers each year to the Mission.
The famous “Nickel” ? the name that Fifth Street had had since the Mission was founded in the 1930’s ? was closed by 6:00 AM. Vehicular traffic was re-routed around the street between Wall and San Pedro so that setup could start early Saturday morning. There were inflated bounce houses, slides, craft tents and food service areas set up. Families started lining up early so they could have plenty of time for food and fun before getting their school materials and backpacks.
“Last year, we thought that we had made it through the roughest part of the recession and that things were starting to look up,” said Smith. “But the latest unemployment numbers and the continuing economic turmoil means it is hard for people to find work, especially those who have low skills, insufficient education and big gaps in their work history. The Mission works daily to provide education and job training ? but many of our graduates can’t find jobs in the current market.” Smith adds, “The economy of Skid Row won’t turn around until there are living-wage jobs and affordable housing for those at the bottom of the economic ladder.”
Representatives from the Los Angeles Christian Health Centers and volunteer nursing students from all over the area provided health screenings including height and weight, body mass index calculation and nutrition information. California State University Long Beach sent students and faculty to conducted speech and hearing evaluations of the children who attended.
U. S. Bank and City National Bank (CNB) provided financial substantial support for the event.
“Once again it is our pleasure to assist in the sponsorship of the Los Angeles Mission’s end of summer Block Party,” said Robert Deidrick, Vice President of US Bank. “This annual event is the ideal program to truly demonstrate US Bank’s commitment to our local community and though our contribution hopefully helps shape the lives of our inner city young people.”
“City National Bank is delighted to share our love of reading with the children and families that come to the Los Angeles Mission for this day of fun,” said Bonnie Tseng, Assistant VP, event volunteer organizer, City National Bank. In addition to financial support, City National also donated books to the young guests.
For 75 years, the Los Angeles Mission has served homeless and hurting men and women of downtown Los Angeles, providing emergency services such as shelter, food and clothing. In addition, the Los Angeles Mission also offers long-term residential rehabilitation programs, including education, job training, transitional housing and counseling.

As someone with a melting pot of origins comprising my ancestry, one of my favourite ways for years now to describe my genealogical background is to say that I'm a "Heinz 57 of European nationalities".
Of the I've been able to conclusively determine through my genealogical research there's British, French (and French Canadian), German, Russian, Prussian, Polish, and (wayyyyy back) Danish. I don?t for a second that others are whirling around in the mix, too.
Many of us have similar backgrounds, made up of ancestors who hailed from various corners of the world, so it comes as to surprise that when I use this term, others have been quick to eagerly adopt it for their own use. I don't mind in the least, and encourage you to do the same, if you'd like.
The term "Heinz 57", which appears on many Heinz products to this day, is often used to describe a diverse and/or large group of varying items. For example, you could say, "The buffet at Sally's party was a real Heinz 57 of dishes", or, "My wardrobe is so eclectic, it's a Heinz 57 of styles", and folks would instantly understand that you were describing a mixed bag of items, people, situations or what have you.
The origins of this expression lie in a slogan that the famous food manufacturing company used in it early days: "Heinz 57 Varieties of Pure Food Products".
Company legend has it that "57" was chosen because the numbers five and seven were of particular significance to Henry John Heinz, founder of the brand. While the company was actually manufacturing more than 60 different products at the time, Heinz like the ring that 57 had to it and opted to use that number as part of his company?s marketing campaign and branding.

Heinz products have been on shelves for over a hundred years now and their logo is one of the most recognizable in the world. As such, I started wondering one day, just what were some of the products that made up the yesteryear list of 57 Heinz varieties?
If we hop back in time to the 1930s, the following is a list of 57 products that Heinz produced. The etymology of words and phrases has always fascinated me. I love finding out where folklore ends and the truth begins (or vice versa!). It's lovely to know that Heinz really did have 57 products to back up their slogan back in the early decades of the twenty-first century - and can't help but wish they still manufactured a few of these (how delicious do Quince Jelly and Pineapple Preserves sound?).
Whether you consider yourself a Heinz 57 of different nationalities, are a "purebred pup" like my 100% Italian husband, or fall somewhere in between, chances are you've heard of the expression "Heinz 57" before.
Now, as beloved radio broadcaster Paul Harvey would have said, you know the rest of the story behind this classic expression and the brand that spawned its usage.

Pausing to remember that the glass is half full

My husband is not a pessimist by any stretch of the imagination, yet I think he'd be the first to say that between the two of us, I tend to look at things with the more rose coloured glasses. As such, it touched me a lot when, just the other day while we were in the living room, out the blue he looked up from his laptop and said rather matter-of-factly, "Life is good".
Yes, sweetheart, it is.
This year has been a rough one on various front, and we've both been contending with some pretty heavy medical issues on top of many other things. It seemed at first as though 2011 couldn't deliver a good day to save its skin, and it's still not winning any "best year ever" awards (not by a long shot).
Yet, as with many of the harder times in life, you can't help but grow during the challenges. They push you as person, make you strive harder toward your dreams, remind you of the things that matter most in this crazy world of ours.
Tribulations are by no means a 20th or 21st century invention. Whether it was outrunning a sabre-toothed tiger thousands upon thousands of years ago, praying the black plague spared you, or forging your way across a fledging continent as a pioneer, the human race has dealt with negatives and hardships of every magnitude since the dawn of time.
Some trials are massive, others only seem it. Some break us, some make us, and others turn out to be false alarms. There are good days and bad, but if you see the potential for sunshine on cloudy ones, you'll usually pull through those bleaker moments in one piece.
As we hit the middle of August, I'm reminded of a Jane Austen quote, "To sit in the shade on a fine day, and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment." To me these words tie into my husbands positive sentiments about life.
During these last few sizzling hot weeks of summer, no matter where you feel your life is at right now, it's important to take a moment and pause.
{Take your cue from this charmingly sweet 1930s pair, pull up a table and your finest tea set and spend a little time in the garden - be it proverbial or not - to recharge your spirit, remember what truly matters, and see the glass - or the teacup - as half full. Stop to let yourself breath. To count your blessings. To spend a few calm minutes in the shade, refreshing your soul with the beauty and energy of summer. Like most hardships we face, this season does not last forever, and its immensely important to savour the good in while we still can.
As this new week begins and we usher in the last chapter of summer, I hope you'll echo my husband's lovely statement, and take a minute to remember that, when all is said and done, life really is good.
