Lupe Fiasco Writes 'Revolution' Tribute to Gil Scott-Heron

Lupe Fiasco is a rapper of substance, which is why he would not let the passing of Gil Scott-Heron go by without paying tribute to the hip-hop pioneer. Inspired by Scott-Heron, who Lupe called a "guiding light of a human being," the Chicago MC expressed his sentiments on his blog, using the prolific poet and musician's 1970 work, 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,' as the spark needed to ignite his own words.

In the 'Words I Never Said' creator's piece, titled 'The Television Will Not Be Revolutionized,' Fiasco rhymes about the ills seen on TV, among other things, from shows featuring "small claims court drama" to "teenage baby mamas." He also dubs the screen a "one-eyed monster" that had a hand in raising "most of the world." While the rhymer's post is rather long, the message is clear: there's more thoughtlessness that comes from television viewing than thought provocation.

Gil Scott-Heron died on Friday (May 27) at the age of 62. An admitted cocaine user and a battler of an HIV infection, the spoken-word artist was resilient and focused on his creativity, combining music and poetry and inspiring many artists after him to include spoken-word artistry into their own craft.

Reflections on 'Survivor: Redemption Island'

I can't seem to stop thinking or talking about the end of Survivor: Redemption Island, so I decided it was probably worth trying to organize my thoughts and continue the conversation in a post here.

Honestly, I don't think the Redemption Island twist worked well at all. The idea that someone could come back into the game was intriguing, but the way it actually played out was fairly boring and actually undermined the game.

Not having someone leave the game at the end of each episode (or at least most episodes) really wrecks the dramatic structure of the whole show. And toward the end, when people just kept getting added and added to the island and no one was leaving and no one knew what was going to happen next -- that was just frustrating. Going into the finale with eight people left in the game didn't do much for the tension, either. In theory, it should have felt like the possibilities were endless, but by the time it really happened -- BOOM, sorry Matt and the other guys, Andrea's back in, followed five minutes later by Andrea's ouster -- it just felt pointless.

Vanessa Redgrave Unveils Charity Rose For Natasha Richardson

Vanessa Redgrave paid tribute to her late daughter Natasha Richardson as she unveiled a rose named in her honor at Britain’s Chelsea Flower Show on Monday 23 May 2011.

The veteran star visited the horticultural event in London to introduce the Natasha Richardson rose, named after her actress daughter, who died two years ago after a skiing accident.

The light pink UK-grown rose, which will be sold exclusively at the 29 Dobbies Garden Centres throughout the UK and online at www.dobbies.com, aims to raise �10,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK. Each rose retails at just �14.99, �5 of which will be donated to Make-A-Wish.

Vanessa Redgrave said: “Natasha’s family, her husband and her boys, are so happy that the Natasha Richardson rose will be on view to rose lovers at the Chelsea Flower Show. Neil Fishlock, head of horticulture at Dobbies, explained: “The flower is a true beauty. It is generous in size, pure in colour, and elegant in form. The perfume is also a marvel with its citrus base ? and very few roses are able to achieve this distinction. The Natasha Richardson is also a very easy rose to grow and to look after as its resistance to disease is excellent, giving the flower a real robustness.”

Joely Richardson, Natasha’s sister, added: "Natasha was a keen gardener and would be honoured to have a rose created in her memory. Pink was her favourite colour and so we chose this particular rose which is incredibly feminine and joyous; it captures her extreme vitality.

Drama Behind American Idol Finale

All American Idol fans are aware that it has been an ongoing tradition for the previous Idol winner to present the newly crowned one with a trophy. Unfortunately Lee DeWyze was nowhere to be seen when Scotty McCreery's moment came during the recent Season 10 finale.

Fans instantly knew something was amiss and started to tweet Lee himself, hoping to find out why he wasn�t there. Thankfully Lee tried to clear the air and responded via Twitter: �I was not asked to be involved in the Finale. It wasn't until about 2 minutes before they announced that Nigel had approached me and asked if he could borrow me for a second. I didn�t feel a last second jump on stage was appropriate. It was Scotty's moment.�

Earlier, producer Nigel Lythgoe stirred up the buzz surrounding the drama when he tweeted a different side of the story. "I was so upset Lee DeWyze wouldn't present the winners trophy to Scotty. Especially as he'd been on the show this Season. I guess he was shy,� he wrote.

Lee�s brother, however, wasn�t as calm about the whole incident and took to Twitter to express his dissatisfaction. �American Idol producers have no respect�that is all�serious b.s.,� Michael DeWyze tweeted.

Bright and cheerful summer dresses from 1948

? Day 141 of Vintage 365 ?

Once long ago in a time before incessant text messaging, countless Real Housewives shows (you know, back in those days when more housewives actually lived up to their names and looked after their homes and families instead of starting cat fights for living), and Starbucks locations on every corner, a department store chain by the name of Eatons presided over Canada from coast to shining coast.

For a time Eaton's (the official name of which was the T. Eaton Co. Limited) was the largest department store chain in this country, with a history stretching all the way back to its humble Toronto roots in 1869.

During the many decades Eatons called Canada home, it was as commonplace and beloved as Sears (perhaps even more so in some parts of the country), and it produced many fine, wonderfully image rich catalogues over the years (before the chain went bankrupt around the start of the 21st century, that is).

It's from one such vintage catalogue, specifically the summer 1948 edition, that today's image originally hailed. On this bright, lively page we see three young women sporting dress styles that were popular that season.

Each one in markedly distinct from the other, and yet they all share in common similar traits, too, such as mid-calf length hems, short sleeves and vibrant colours.

The cotton candy pink and black dress on the left hand side telegraphs a charmingly peasant/ethnic vibe. The two piece skirt and matching blouse combo in the centre (worn by a young woman that I can't help but think resembles the modern day comedian Sarah Silverman a tad) is somewhat more formal (I could so easily imagine a young mom popping over to the weekly PTA meeting in it), yet still very summery and playful (thanks to that vivid daffodil yellow shade).

And last but not least, the third dress, with it's square shoulders and distinctive black bow at the collar, is a riot of pretty rainbow colours that instantly bring to mind a traveling carnival.

Each of these looks came it at under $6.00 and would have been relatively affordable options for Canadian women of 1948. I find something to like in all three dresses, yet I think that the chevron patterned "Gibson Girl" frock on the right, bursting with feel-good candy colours, that is my personal favourite.

While sadly Eatons department stores are no longer a part of the Canadian landscape, thanks to terrific vintage images like this catalogue page (which comes by way of Old Catalogs on Flickr) memories of this classic retailer, and a delightful dose of 1940s summertime wardrobe inspiration alike, can live on for vintage fashion lovers to draw oodles of sartorial inspiration from.

Reports have also surfaced that claim there could be multiple weddings held around the world and hundreds of celebrity guests attending.

"I've always dreamed of a big wedding. I'll probably do something really over-the-top. Super feminine but still really modern, chic and cool, but it has to have a lot of heart, it has to be all about the family," Kim told People magazine.

But bigger than the Royal Wedding? Surely not!

'American Idol' Non-Cap

Consider this my little one woman protest against the train wreck that American Idol has become this season. No. Train wrecks are interesting. What is the dullest possible thing imaginable? Watching paint dry is too trite. Watching paint dry while being forced to listen to watered down versions of America's favorite country/pop/rock songs followed by inane repetitions of the words "in it to win it, "beautiful," and "doing your thing?" That's a little more like it.

I did something tonight that I haven't done once over ten seasons of being an avid Idol maniac. I stopped watching. This is huge coming from someone who once wrote a recap of how she imagined the show went down because she was out of town and had to miss the episode (This actually happened. During Season 5).

But 8:00 came around and I had to make a choice among Idol, Modern Family, and the Bulls game. I could only choose two. I could've gone upstairs or something, but who can move?

I opted to just stop recording Idol. And I feel as if a duffle bag holding the weight of Ryan Seacrest's suit budget has been lifted from my shoulders.

Will I watch the finale next week? Probably. But only if the Bulls aren't playing.

Mark Ruffalo And Ed Begley Jr To Be Honored At Celebrity Charity Event

On Saturday, June 4, Global Green USA will welcome celebrity guests to its 15th Annual Millennium Awards, which acknowledge and honor individuals whose lives and careers exemplify Global Green USA’s mission of “fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure world.”
