Naomi Campbell Talks Fashion For Relief

Written by Tim Saunders

Last night, May 16, Naomi Campbell took her Fashion For Relief show to Cannes to raise money for Japan. Prior to leaving for the event, she took the time to talk to Barneys New York to talk about her charity initiative.

“I started Fashion for Relief in 2005 as a way of uniting the fashion industry to help those in need,” she said in the interview. "I am incredibly hands-on and will pick up the phone and call friends to organize music, ask for art donations, arrange designer donations and invite talent to walk in the shows.

“I thought it would be fun to host the first-ever fashion show during the Cannes Film Festival, and the theme is “Runway to Red Carpet,” so I thought it would be appropriate.

“I love the spontaneity of the shows. There is always an element of surprise and fun?the vibe backstage is like one big party. Everyone is there because they want to help those less fortunate, and that’s what is important.”

Since the first Fashion For Relief event in 2005, Naomi has helped raise over $6.3 million for disaster relief around the world.
