Once in a blue moon, a director comes along whose filmmaking sensibilities line up directly with yours as an audience member. I don't write or direct movies, but if I did, I like to think they'd resemble the work of J.J. Abrams. M:I-3. And though he only has three feature directing credits to his name, he has quickly become one of the most respected filmmakers working today. Moviegoers haven't seen someone quite as adept at pulling off the smart and successful populist studio film since, well, Steven Spielberg. But how did he achieve this status in Hollywood? Let's go back in time and trace the path that led Abrams to where he is today.
