Enjoying a spot of Lucy Maud Montgomery's springtime poetry

? Day 113 of Vintage 365 ?

Easter weekend should be a time of peace and happiness, of celebrating and holding dear that elements of this resplendent part of the year that matter most to you and your family.

Though we had snow as recently here as Monday the 18th (though to be fair, it was more like a three-part flurry of rain, snow and tiny pea meal sized balls of hail), by and large the world is looking, feeling, and even smelling more like spring (gone is the heady, beautiful scent of wood smoke in the air, in its place the earthy aroma of damp soil and budding verdant grass).

I awoke on this fresh Saturday morning with the words of a poem by beloved early twentieth century Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery dancing like springtime pixies in my mind. While we commonly associate LMM with her superb books (most famous amongst which is the Prince Edward Island classic, Anne of Green Gables), Montgomery was also a gifted poetess who wrote a wonderful array of poems during her lifetime.

The piece below, titled elegantly "Spring Song", is amongst my favourite of her poems, and one that I enjoy rereading each year as spring really and truly begins to come to life in my own corner of the Canadian landscape.

To further help impart of a delightfully seasonal vibe to today's post, below Montgomery's graceful poem, resides a vintage French photo postcard (which comes via Chicks57 on Flickr) of a young girl carrying an oversized basket of spring flowers, that I thought partnered well with this timeless poem.

Spring Song

by Lucy Maud Montgomery

Hark, I hear a robin calling!

List, the wind is from the south!

And the orchard-bloom is falling

Sweet as kisses on the mouth.

In the dreamy vale of beeches

Fair and faint is woven mist,

And the river's orient reaches

Are the palest amethyst.

Every limpid brook is singing

Of the lure of April days;

Every piney glen is ringing

With the maddest roundelays.

Come and let us seek together

Springtime lore of daffodils,

Giving to the golden weather

Greeting on the sun-warm hills.

Ours shall be the moonrise stealing

Through the birches ivory-white;

Ours shall be the mystic healing

Of the velvet-footed night.

Ours shall be the gypsy winding

Of the path with violets blue,

Ours at last the wizard finding

Of the land where dreams come true.

I hope, sweet friends, that this charming look at spring, in its endlessly appealing grace and wonder will help launch your weekend (and Easter Eve!) off on a deeply cheerful note - as it most certainly has mind.

Teri Hatcher To Host Celebrity Charity Yard Sale

Teri Hatcher will host a very special celebrity charity red carpet yard sale to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and RockSTAR Music Education this weekend.

The purpose of this event is to raise much needed funds to help support children suffering from childhood cancer and other life threatening diseases. Celebrity guests will include Carrie Ann Inaba, Kourtney Kardashian, Goldie Hawn, Louise Roe, Mariel Hemingway, Jayma Mays and Estella Warren.

Guests will enjoy a carnival like atmosphere with food and beverage vendors, including cotton candy and snow cones. Musical performances will be provided by the “Rockstar” program which helps with funding music for underprivileged children.

The celebrity yard sale will offer an array of new and gently used celebrity owned items (designer bags, clothes, etc) as well as a number of vendors and brands selling their back stock with proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The event will provide an opportunity to buy great finds at low prices!

St. Jude revolutionized the way the world treats pediatric cancer and other deadly diseases. St. Jude was the first pediatric cancer research institution to place doctors, scientists and patients “all under one roof,” creating a worldwide model for “bench-to-bedside” research and treatment of childhood cancers and other life-threatening diseases.

RockSTAR Music Education was founded six years ago with the mission of bringing music back into schools that had slashed their own music programs. RockSTAR Music Education has blossomed into the most successful and popular after-school rock ‘n’ roll music education program in California, with sessions in over 60 elementary schools and more than 150 student bands across Los Angeles, San Diego, and Nashville.

The event takes place on May 1 at Tiato Garden, 2700 Colorado Blvd, Santa Monica. You must have a ticket to attend, available here.

Eli Manning To Be Honored At Young Women's Leadership Network Event

New York Giants Quarterback and 2008 Super Bowl winner Eli Manning will be among the honorees at the Young Women’s Leadership Network’s 10th Anniversary Celebration for Collegebound Initiative (CBI) next month.

CBI is a program of Young Women’s Leadership Network (YWLN), a 501©3 organization that helps low income youth to break the cycle of poverty through education. CBI places full-time college guidance counselors in schools to work with every student. Since inception, CBI has helped over 4,000 young men and women achieve their higher education dreams with a 95% annual college acceptance track record. Additionally, CBI has generated more than $48 million in scholarships and grants for our students to make college affordable. YWLN also supports The Young Women’s Leadership Schools, a network of five all-girls public schools in New York City and Philadelphia with affiliate schools nationwide.

CBI is a life-changing college guidance program working in 13 high-need public high schools in New York City and Philadelphia. The achievement gap in college enrollment is strongly correlated with economic status and race/ethnicity, with low-income, minority students most vulnerable to being denied college access. CBI successfully tackles these problems by providing early college awareness activities, personalized counseling, and application, financial aid, enrollment, and alumni support. The students CBI serves attain four-year college degrees at significantly higher rates than their low-income, minority peers.

The event takes place on May 5 at the Allen Room at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Broadway at 60th Street, NYC. More information can be found here.

Movie Review - The Conspirator

BY ROBERT HAMMERLE, guest contributor to Hammervision

the-conspirator-movie-poster.jpg

He stood in the crowd, tears in his eyes, as he stared at the scaffolding containing his client and her other three condemned co-conspirators. Having nobly fought to save her life, he now could only look on in anguish at the magnitude of the injustice. She stood there stoically, as their eyes temporarily met. He nodded as if to let her know that there was at least one friend in the crowd before the rope was placed over her neck and she fell to her doom.

Robert Redford's "The Conspirator" is a story about an historical injustice that took place in the summer of 1865 that resonates to this very day. It is an overtly political film, and no apologies need or should be offered. What happened to Mary Surratt following the inflamed passions of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln is likely happening to some poor soul presently confined to Guantanamo Bay, like it or not.

James McAvoy plays Frederick Aiken, a Union Officer who proudly served to suppress the Southern insurrection known as our Civil War. Seeking only to escape the horrors that he witnessed in combat, he longs for a life as a civilian lawyer. But the assassination of President Lincoln changed the fate of our country in general and Mr. Aiken in particular.

Given the horror of five years of war that left over 600,000 Americans dead and untold others wounded and disfigured (1/3 of Mississippi's State budget for 1866 went for artificial limbs), the country demanded both accountability and vengeance. Somebody was going to pay with their lives for this monstrous act, and a wide net was cast in pursuit of the fleeing assassin John Wilkes Booth and his cohorts.

After he was trapped in a barn and subsequently killed by pursuing Union Soldiers, his closest co-conspirators were quickly captured. They not only included David Herod, the man who fled with Booth, but also George Atzerodt and Lewis Powell, Booth's partners in this hideous crime who failed in their attempts to kill both Vice President Johnson and Secretary of State Seward.

Tragically, all of these co-conspirators had one thing in common, namely staying and meeting over several months at a boarding house run by Mary Surratt. Ms. Surratt's son John was also implicated in the assassination, although he, unlike Booth and the others, escaped.

However, in his absence a Surratt had to pay, and that was the unfortunate Ms. Surratt.Rather than give the accused assassins of the President a civilian trial, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (Kevin Kline in his best performance in years) ordered them tried before a Military Tribunal. He not only selected the members of the tribunal, but also ordered them to proceed to trial within two months of their arrest. In Ms. Surratt's case, she only met her attorney close to the start of the trial, and her defense was limited in numerous ways, not the least of which was the refusal to allow her to testify in her own behalf.

Into this legal nightmare stepped the aforementioned Frederick Aiken, wonderfully played by James McAvoy. Hating the South for all of the destruction they had visited on our country, he initially wanted nothing to do with Ms. Surratt and her co-defendants. However, he was convinced to take her case by Maryland's redoubtable Senator Reverdy Johnson, after being reminded that a fundamental right contained in our Constitution was that everyone charged with a crime was entitled both a trial and a lawyer.

The great Tom Wilkinson is wonderful as Senator Johnson, a man who knows that Ms. Surratt has no chance unless she is defended by a credible soldier from the North. Wilkinson has never been disappointing in any role, and he certainly delivers here as a laconic figure who knows that while doom is on the horizon for Ms. Surratt, it was important for the legacy of our Constitution for someone to try any way.

What ensues is a shell of a trial where the result was never in doubt. Guilty or not, Ms. Surratt never had a chance. Incredibly, the only evidence presented consisted of little more than the fact that she ran a boarding house where the co-conspirators met, and this hardly qualified as proof beyond a reasonable doubt by any standard.

Robin Wright is wondrous as Ms. Surratt, a stoic daughter of the South who will not betray her son even if it is at the cost of her own life. Despised by the public, you see her as a victim of forces beyond her control. Again, the question was not her guilt or innocence, but whether the country needed accountability in the form of a sacrificial lamb in order to properly heal.

As someone who has spent over 35 years in the criminal courtroom, I must say that the scenes of the trial itself are somewhat stilted compared to other powerful courtroom dramas such as "Inherit the Wind" (1960) and "Anatomy of a Murder" (1959). However, it would be unfair to be too critical, as the whole process was literally fixed, and Director Redford was not about to let anyone forget that central fact.

In addition, McAvoy does a great job embodying a defense lawyer who ends up sacrificing so much for a client who stands for everything he has vehemently opposed his entire adult life. As he becomes increasingly dedicated to the fundamental principle that Ms. Surratt receive a fair trial, he pays an enormous price. His friends doubt him, his fianc wonders what he has become and he finds himself socially ostracized in a fashion that clearly challenges his future.

On a personal note, I could not help but reflect on the time when I along with my wife, Monica Foster, and others represented Gregory Resnover in a failed attempt to save his life in 1994. Like McAvoy, we had become convinced beyond any legal question that Mr. Resnover had been denied both a fair trial and appeal. (Surratt was not allowed to appeal.) Our unsuccessful attempts to overturn his conviction led us down a path that challenged close relationships with friends in State Government, not to mention a large segment of the public.

As I watched him die a horrific death in the electric chair (a form of execution soon abolished by our Legislature), much like attorney Aiken did Ms. Surratt on the scaffold, I was both emotionally crushed and overwhelmed. I thought then as I do now that when public emotion and political considerations, no matter how well meaning in their own right, trump the Constitution, we all become complicit in the end. No amount of water will wash away the un- Constitutional stain left on Pontius Pilate's hands.

For that very reason we should not stand silently by while our Government under President Obama elects to proceed with Military Tribunals with regard to the Guantanamo Bay inmates. It is worth remembering that when Ms. Surratt's son, John, was subsequently arrested after his mother's execution, Military Tribunals had been eliminated and he was tried to a civilian jury. Failing to reach a verdict, he was set free. Yet what good did it do the poor woman laying cold in the ground?

When attorney Aiken desperately sought a Writ of Habeas Corpus from a Federal Judge following the verdict against Ms. Surratt, you see the Judge asking him, "Do you think she is innocent?" Mr. Aiken responded the same way Monica and I did concerning Mr. Resnover, "I don't really know. But what I do know is that we will never find out if this monstrous injustice is allowed to stand."

To quote the legendary folk group, Peter, Paul and Mary: "When will we ever learn."

'Dancing With the Stars' results: Top 7 couples revealed

It's time to see what the fallout will be from last night's Americana Extravaganza.

First of the results: Hines Ward and Kym Johnson are safe, and Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are in jeopardy.

Head judge Len Goodman announces that this week's reprisal is Romeo and Chelsie Hightower's "New York, New York" foxtrot. Good choice -- they were adorable!

During Toby Keith's performance, Lacey and Maks dance for a bit -- and I see the first mistake from the pros in one of these dances that I've ever noticed. Weird.

More results: Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas are safe. Romeo and Chelsie Hightower are too. And Chris Jericho and Cheryl Burke are still in jeopardy.

'Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution:' Attack of the killer tomato?

Guest blogger Amanda here:

I'm back with more observations and recaps from episode two of "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution," in which Oliver's back for more punishment dished out by Los Angeles administrators.

--When the episode begins, the earnest Oliver is still trying to get fresh food into all the schools and still can't get access to any L.A. school.

--Oliver returns to the board (the same board that rebuffed him last week) and gives them an update on his "progress." His presentation is met with silence. He sees not even a glimmer of hope.

--Oliver declares war. He's going to hijack a school and give out free lunches, doing things his way.

--He's dressed as a giant tomato and bombards the parents with flyers. He also hands out on-budget pack lunches that include fruit, white milk and a wrap with smoked turkey.

--Conceding that his stunt was fun, but not magic, Oliver calls for luck.

--"It feels like I'm not wasting my bloody time." Things start to look up, Oliver finds a loophole. A contract school not governed by the same administration that's keeping Oliver out of the other schools has heard about his plight and that school has invited Oliver to work with him. He finds some allies there. Though they also seem nervous.

--Almost half of the students in the contract school's community are overweight or obese.

--As he's visiting the campus, Oliver's told he's not permitted to step foot into the cafeteria. He peers from afar.

--He's not allowed to do anything with school lunches, but is assigned to culinary education. He's now a culinary arts teacher. "Baby steps," Oliver says. I can't believe these people will let Oliver teach the students about nutrition, but not actually feed them a nutritious meal.

--Family time with Mommy Oliver cooking. I could use less of this mush. Get back to the conflict!

--Oliver returns to Patra's to create some "brilliant fast food." He's hoping the owner Deno has come around to his way of thinking. "We've made no progress whatsoever." Oliver takes Deno out to the parking lot to talk business. He offers to double the amount of business made there in two weeks if Deno gives him complete control. Deno busts out some anti-Anglo sentiments on Oliver, suggesting he doesn't know anything about fast food. Deno's still mad that Oliver made a "smoothie" last week. Oliver wants to slap himself.

Especially if you are obsessed with food, love beautiful food photography, wish you could find healthy food recipes (lots of vegan & gluten-free recipes), and have a sweet tooth (like me). Lisa, a blogger, food stylist, food photographer, yoga lover, baker & kitchen wiz, event planner, and all around sweetheart (we met at Alt Summit in January), is someone you'll feel like you know just after reading a few posts. I seriously wish I lived down the street from her so I could invite myself over for dinner we could hangout on a regular basis.

Damian remembers TV On the Radio?s Gerard Smith

Last Wednesday, the music community lost a great citizen in Gerard Smith, best known as the bassist and keyboardist in TV On the Radio. The 36-year-old succumbed to a long battle with lung cancer after leaving the band last year to undergo cancer treatment. On this week’s episode of The Wedge, Damian paid his respects [...]

This 1940s Lemon Chiffon Pie recipe is the perfect springtime dessert

? Day 96 of Vintage 365 ?

Let me begin today's post by thanking those lovely folks of who shared their comments with me last week when I announced that I was going to revamp the Wonderful Wednesday Recipe post (a longstanding repeat post here on Chronically Vintage) and merge (for the remaining duration of 2011) with the Vintage 365 series. I sincerely appreciate your feedback!

Suggestions such as recipes for frugal comfort foods (thank you for that one, Rocky Mountain Homemaker!) and doing themed months - such as a month of recipes from the 1930s (care of a commenter using the very food post appropriate name of Blackberry), are both ideas that I will keep firmly planted in mind as I search for entertaining vintage recipes to share with you all.

With spring now underway (said the Canadian gal, quickly darting her gaze out the window to make it hadn't suddenly started snowing again, like it did last Thursday!), one's mind tends to turn to lighter fare that incorporates the jubilant colours and sublime flavours of the year's second season into its composition.

Few tastes call to mind the return of spring more than the tart, invigorating, immensely lovely flavour of lemon, and when paired that workhorse darling of the vintage dessert world, chiffon pie, you've got a real winner of a dish on your hands.

{Click here for a larger version of this yummy vintage lemon chiffon pie recipe.}

While I highly doubt many companies would likely be so bold as to promote the "healthy properties" (such as being high in Vitamin C and easy to digest) of a dessert like like Knox did back in the 1940s (when this recipe appeared in one of their gelatine ads) today, there's something extra wonderful about the fact that not all yesteryear recipes were as obsessed with being diet-fare worthy as many you see in print are nowadays are.

I rather like the idea that at one point a group of Knox marketing folks were sitting around putting together the next line up of advertisement recipes and trying to come up with seemingly healthy point for what is, there's no denying, clearly a sweet treat. Though in this marvelous sounding Lemon Chiffon Pie's defence, it's not nearly as sugary or caloric as some desserts - both past and present.

Calling to mind the colour of baby chicks, gardens of tulips or soft yellow crocuses, and the soothing return of sunshine, this delightful vintage lemon chiffon pie recipe (which comes via vintage.kitten's great Flickr stream) requires a minimal amount or ingredients, can be whipped up in a jiffy, and has the added appeal of being the kind of delicious classic that works every bit as well today as it did sixty five years ago.

Bon apptit!
