My Art Shop & Boob Paintings

I've been thinking about how to write this post for a long time. Years in fact. I've wanted to be an artist since I was a child. I grew up taking classes at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and took every art class I could find each summer and at every school I attended. But when I had to make a decision about going to college, I was too afraid to go the art route. I realized how hard it would be to become a financially stable artist, so I ended up getting a bachelor's degree in journalism because working at a magazine was also a dream of mine that seemed more stable. I was planning on moving to New York naively thinking I'd get a job at Marie Claire or Elle ... that was my goal anyway. Of course, things didn't exactly happen like that.

I went to Lido Beach 2-3 times a week.

One week after I graduated college, I married my best friend and got a job at a publishing company that just happened to be located on the beautiful beaches of Florida's gulf coast. I thought that would be a good place to start and I love the beach. I spent countless hours on the beach alone, thinking and reading. My creativity was flowing with all of that beach time, when I came up with an idea that I recently decided it was time to execute in a major way. This idea requires an explanation, hence the buildup.

I love the idea of the body as a brush, and have always had an appreciation for nude art. Breasts are one of the outward symbols of femininity, and they are one of the main things that physically make us female. To me, they are beautiful. And when I think about women who get cancer from the very part of their body that makes them a woman, it just blows my mind. It's hard to find someone who doesn't know someone who's had breast cancer; I have friends, family members, and colleagues, that have all suffered from breast cancer. They have all been a huge source of inspiration for this series. So combining my curiosity for the body as a brush, my appreciation of breasts, and the sensitive subject of breast cancer, my idea for boob paintings was born.

You read that correctly, boob paintings. I actually paint my boobs, and use them as my "brush" (it's more like a stamp). Currently, all of the boob paintings are on 8x10 pre-stretched canvas panels that can be easily put into a frame. The works are all untitled until purchased, and the purchaser gets to name the painting after the person that currently has or has had breast cancer that inspired them to purchase the painting. If the purchaser would like to share the story behind the name of the painting, I will feature the painting and the story on the Boob Art for Breast Cancer blog. 5% of the net profit from the boob painting series will be donated to breast cancer.

 I don't just do boob paintings, I also do abstract paintings which are also on the shop, however, I just felt the boob paintings needed an explanation. And yes, I think calling them "boob paintings" is funny and a little blunt. That's what they are, and I think it's OK to have humor in your life.
