Isis King to appear in all-star installment of 'America's Next Top Model'

Isis King, the first transgender contestant to appear as a finalist on "America's Next Top Model" is coming back to national television as part of the show's 17th season, which has an all-star theme.

The 25-year-old New York City resident, who is originally from Prince George's County, will be one of 14 memorable models from past shows picked for a second chance to sashay their way to potential modeling contracts, cash and other prizes. (The winner of the show will have a contract with Covergirl Cosmetics, a spread in Vogue Italia, an Express fashion campaign and the opportunity to become a correspondent on "Extra.") The new season will premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 9 p.m. on The CW.

"I'm excited to see my client Isis King in cycle 17 of ‘America's Next Top Model (All-Star Edition),’” said King’s manager Delano when reached for comment this morning. “It's great that Tyra (Banks) has said herself ‘Isis is the most talked about Top Model in the history of the show.’”

The news comes as a surprise to fans of the show who have followed King's career since she was eliminated three years ago during cycle 11 of the show. She finished 10th in that installment.

As recent as November King said that she had no intention of returning to the world of professional modeling.

“Modeling is something that I did for fun,” King said in an interview with The Baltimore Sun in November 2010. “My aspiration is to be successful with art. Of course I will continue to freelance model, but my aspirations were never to be a supermodel. Being a model means that you are a blank canvas. I'm already an entity. I'm already my own person. I've transformed into this amazing person. I can never see myself as a blank canvas.”

At that time, King said she was pushing an acting career—she had a role in a short film, “Bella Maddo.” In addition, she expressed interest in working as a makeup artist and hair stylist.

“I'm very creative,” she said in the November interview. “I have a lot of personality. You didn't get a chance to see it on the show.”

King is scheduled to participate in the upcoming Baltimore Fashion Week. In June, she signed a contract that will have her attend the event as a front-row guest on Aug. 19. She will also model clothing for several designers the following two nights. Baltimore Fashion Week runs Aug. 18-21.
“Isis is excited about Baltimore Fashion Week and looks forward to seeing all the designers and strutting her stuff on the runway,” Delano said.
